At Philip Southcote School, we are proud to be an inclusive Surrey County special school, part of the Bourne Education Trust, supporting young people aged 11–19 with moderate learning difficulties (MLD) and a wide range of additional needs. Our SEND Provision
We cater for pupils with needs across:
- Cognition and Learning
- Communication and Interaction
- Social, Emotional and Mental Health
- Sensory and/or Physical Needs
Our Deaf Pupil Provision offers personalised support for students whose primary need is deafness, using a Total Communication approach, including BSL, SSE, SEE, Visual Phonics and visuals to meet each learner’s needs.
We comply fully with the SEND Code of Practice (2015) and the Equality Act (2010), making reasonable adjustments to ensure learning is accessible to all.
Identifying and Meeting Needs
All students have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) which identifies their strengths, needs and the support required. The SENCo Team, teachers and support staff work closely with families and external professionals to implement each plan effectively.
Progress is reviewed regularly through Annual Reviews, parent meetings, and the Southcote Steps assessment system.
Specialist Support and Environment
We offer a well-equipped and accessible environment, including:
- Soundfield systems in classrooms
- Adapted facilities for physical needs
- A Sensory Room and Regulation Stations to support emotional regulation
- A ‘Thrive Hive’ room where pupils’ pastoral needs are supported
- Our therapy pets -Mabel the dog, George the dog and Berta the bearded dragon
Our dedicated specialist teams include Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, ELSAs (Emotional Literacy Support Assistants), Thrive Practitioners, an Art Therapist and a Talk Therapist.
The DPP Team includes Teachers of the Deaf and Communication Support Workers trained in BSL (minimum Level 3, many to Level 6).
