Deaf Studies - DPP

At Philip Southcote School, Deaf Studies is an essential part of our commitment to inclusion and empowerment for deaf students. The curriculum is designed to help students understand their own deafness, develop confidence in their identity, and gain the skills needed to advocate for themselves in education, employment, and wider society.

Through Deaf Studies, students learn about audiology technology, communication strategies, and the importance of maintaining and managing their own equipment. They explore deaf culture and history, building pride in their identity and understanding the value of community. Lessons focus on practical knowledge such as accessing audiology services, understanding assistive technology and planning for independence.

The programme also supports students in developing resilience and self-advocacy skills. They learn how to communicate their needs in different environments, from classrooms to workplaces, and how to make informed decisions about their future. This includes preparation for adulthood, covering topics such as health, safety, and navigating social situations confidently.

Key skill developments include:

  • Managing and maintaining personal listening devices and technology.
  • Understanding audiograms and the impact of deafness.
  • Communicating needs effectively in education and community settings.
  • Building knowledge of Deaf culture and history.
  • Developing strategies for independence and self-advocacy.

Deaf Studies at Philip Southcote School is purposeful and aspirational. It equips students with the confidence and practical skills to thrive in an inclusive society, ensuring they leave school ready for college, employment, and adult life.
