Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC) at Philip Southcote School

At Philip Southcote School, Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC) is a key component of our inclusive and holistic educational approach. We believe that meaningful learning extends beyond the classroom walls and that outdoor and off-site experiences provide valuable opportunities for personal growth, skill development and curriculum enrichment, particularly for students with Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD).

Outdoor Learning Across Key Stage 3

Outdoor Learning is embedded across Key Stage 3, with carefully structured activities that promote independence, resilience and environmental awareness.

Year 7 students explore natural themes such as Trees and Water, engaging in sensory and investigative activities. An additional unit introduces the John Muir Award, encouraging students to connect with, enjoy and care for wild places.

Year 8 focuses on team games and knotting, fostering collaboration, problem-solving and practical outdoor skills.

Year 9 students engage in more advanced outdoor education, including orienteering, campcraft (tent pitching, fire safety, safe tool use and fire-lighting preparation) and walking. These activities build confidence, spatial awareness and self-reliance.

John Muir Award Integration

Philip Southcote School leads the implementation of the John Muir Award within Outdoor Learning. This nationally recognised scheme supports students in discovering and conserving wild spaces. Our curriculum is adapted to ensure accessibility for MLD learners, with a particular focus on the Conserve strand, empowering students to take active roles in environmental stewardship.

Curriculum Enrichment Through LOtC

LOtC is woven throughout the wider curriculum, offering students diverse and meaningful experiences that enhance learning and personal development:

  • Farm visits provide hands-on experiences in animal care, food production and rural life, linking to Science, Geography and PSHE.
  • Theatre trips with the English department deepen students' understanding of literature, performance and storytelling.
  • Science events and exhibitions allow students to engage with interactive learning and explore STEM in real-world contexts.
  • Horse riding offers therapeutic and physical benefits, supporting confidence, coordination and emotional wellbeing.
  • The GASP Motor Project introduces students to practical mechanics and engineering, fostering vocational skills and teamwork.
  • Personalised intervention programmes at High Ashurst Outdoor Education Centre support targeted development in confidence, resilience and emotional regulation through structured outdoor challenges.
  • Visiting theatre groups and guest speakers regularly enrich the curriculum by bringing professional performances, storytelling and real-world expertise directly into the school environment.

Impact of Visitor Sessions

Visitor sessions enrich learning by bringing new experiences, expertise and perspectives into school. Theatre groups stimulate imagination and emotional expression, while guest speakers, from authors and scientists to community leaders, offer authentic insights that connect classroom learning to the wider world. These sessions:

  • Enhance cultural capital by exposing students to diverse voices and experiences.
  • Boost engagement and motivation through interactive and inspiring presentations.
  • Support curriculum objectives by reinforcing key themes across subjects.
  • Promote aspiration by introducing students to potential career paths and personal journeys.

Why Learning Outside the Classroom Matters

  • Inclusive and differentiated: Activities are designed to meet the diverse needs of our learners, with a focus on sensory engagement and practical achievement.
  • Skills for life: Students develop transferable skills such as teamwork, communication and resilience.
  • Environmental responsibility: Students are encouraged to become active participants in caring for their surroundings.
  • Curriculum relevance: Outdoor and off-site learning is linked to core subjects and personal development goals, enriching the overall educational experience.
  • Cultural diversity: LOtC supports the school's commitment to promoting cultural awareness through varied and meaningful experiences.

Through Learning Outside the Classroom, Philip Southcote School provides students with rich and memorable experiences that broaden horizons, build confidence and support success both in school and beyond.
