British Sign Language - Whole School

At Philip Southcote School, we deliver a whole-school BSL Curriculum to promote inclusive communication across our community. All students and staff learn BSL signs and phrases, enabling them to interact with deaf peers and contribute to a culture of respect and equality. Students learn basic signs and everyday vocabulary and immediately use these signs in basic signed conversations in the lesson, each year developing skills and building sign vocabulary through the cyclical curriculum. This approach strengthens relationships, reduces barriers, and ensures that every member of our school feels valued and understood.

To further embed BSL across the school, we have introduced BSL Ambassadors, DPP students who support their peers and staff in delivering the BSL lessons. These ambassadors play a key role in modelling effective communication, clarifying misconceptions, and celebrating Deaf culture.
