Myself, Relationships and Staying Safe

Curriculum Intent

The aim of delivering the Myself, Relationships and Staying Safe Curriculum is to ensure our pupils will leave Philip Southcote secure in who they are, why they are important and how they fit into the wider world; having the confidence in making informed choices and equipped with the knowledge, awareness, skills and vocabulary they need to stay safe in the world around them.

The curriculum offers each of them the opportunity to explore who they are, reflecting on the values of the school and society in helping them identify what is important to them in forming safe, respectful and constructive relationships with others. They will demonstrate feeling safe and confident in the school environment, at home and in the wider community and will be aware of how to seek support and advice if they need it.

Myself, Relationships and Staying Safe is a spiral curriculum which builds through each year, from Year 7 through to the end of Year 11. It supports our PSHE and RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) curriculum allowing pupils the opportunity to reflect on topics within these subjects, considering how they might relate to their identify and behaviours within the school community and beyond.

Within lessons, a trusting environment is created so pupils can explore and share their opinions, thoughts and feelings through whole group and small group discussions, role play and individual reflection activities. Teachers personalise the learning covered and strategies used, to meet the individual needs of their pupils. Teachers also ensure pupils learn key vocabulary and their meaning and provide opportunities for them to use key vocabulary in discussions and activities planned.
