  • Non - fiction unit based on the animal kingdom with a focus on birds of prey. 
  • Classification of animals – mammals, reptiles, insects, fish and birds. 
  • Characteristics of mammals, reptiles, insects, fish and birds with a focus on birds. 
  • Differentiating between fiction and non- fiction, fact and opinion. 
  • Parts of speech to include nouns, verbs adjectives, adverbs, prepositions and conjunctions. 
  • Read and understand unfamiliar text. First News.  
  • Investigating a chosen bird and using this information to design a magazine article based on chosen bird of prey. To include appearance, diet, natural habitat, reproduction and interesting facts. 
  • Trip to Bird World/ Hawk Conservancy. 
  • Read and understand  increasingly challenging  text and develop critically reading skills. 
  • To plan, draft and edit.  
  • To write accurately, for both pleasure and to inform, using a growing repertoire of correct punctuation and more complex spelling skills.

Reading 

SS8- Can recognise 12 words from reception high frequency list 

SS9- Starting to link stories and non-fiction to their own experiences 

SS10- Read words containing taught GPCs and -s, -es, -ing, -ed, -er and -est endings 

SS11- Can read most words quickly and accurately without overt sounding and blending, when they have been frequently encountered. 

SS12- Drawing inferences such as inferring character's feelings, thoughts and motives from their actions, and beginning to justifying inferences with evidence 

 

Writing 

SS8- Writes in full sentences using 'little' words - The cat is in the box 

SS9- Able to arrange words correctly to form a simple sentence 

SS10- Sequencing sentences to form short narratives 

SS11- Write from memory simple sentences dictated by the teacher that include words using the GPCs, common exception words and punctuation taught so far. 

SS12- Starting to organise paragraphs around a theme. 

 

CVGP 

SS7- Contributes and takes turns in a small group. 

SS8- Communicates in a range of situations i.e. outside, during play, during work sessions 

SS9- Listens and responds to questions from unfamiliar adults and peers. 

SS10- Sequencing sentences to form short narratives
